Betty Carnes, Fought Smoking
October 18, 1987|United Press International
Internationally known ornithologist
who pushed successfully for
passage of the country`s first
no-smoking law, has died at age
82.
Scottsdale Memorial Hospital of an undisclosed illness, it
was announced Friday. She had been in poor health for
several years.
Carnes began her anti-smoking campaign in the 1960s,
spurred by the death of a close friend from lung cancer at
the age of 29.
She was the chief lobbying force behind a 1973 Arizona
no-smoking law that became a model for statutes
throughout the country. Two years earlier, she persuaded
American Airlines to become the first airline to establish a
no- smoking section.
On May 4, 1973, Gov. Jack Williams signed into law the
country`s first state no-smoking law. It prohibited smoking
in elevators, indoor theaters, libraries, art museums,
concert halls and buses. The next year, the law was
broadened to include doctors` waiting rooms and
restricting smoking in hospitals.
She continued to campaign against smoking until weeks
before her death.
